Orange Beach – Sweet Home Alabama

Orange Beach is set amongst the Bayous of the deep south: tranquil waterways and marshes set behind the spits that line the Gulf of Mexico. Here in Orange Beach between New Orleans and Pensacola, tucked behind and protected from the Atlantic by Florida, you will find a warm southern welcome and balmy temperatures 365 days of the year.

Though this is a all year beach resort, there is more to it than sun, sea and sand. A thriving music scene to help you unwind and let your sunburn recover in the warm evenings with a gentle breeze. On these gulf shores you'll find it all: southern rock, country, Cajun, zydeco, R&B, blues, jazz, alternative rock, reggae, acoustical guitar, tribute bands and even choral groups. The entertainment here is laid back and family friendly, like the small town itself. You can choose from honkey-tonk piano bars to small clubs, beach festivals or intimate venues where you can listen to the sounds whilst enjoying the world-renowned Cajun cuisine.

Each may sees a major festival: the Hangout Music Fest. If you're a music fan, this three-day beach event is not to be missed. It draws big names such as The Red Hot Chili Peppers, John Legend and the Foo Fighters and is literally yards from the surf underneath the palm trees. There are often free concerts and you seemingly can't enter a bar without hearing a guitar being strummed.

Orange Beach is a no-shoes, no news type resort where sandy feet are more than acceptable in many of the beach restaurants and bars. Of course, seafood is the order of the day and, should you wish to catch your own, this is one of the top places in the US for sport fishing. In the warm waters and on the table are snapper, grouper and plenty more tasty seafood offerings. You can also fish in the inshore or back bays – the bayous – and may well spot some dolphins. You can charter your own boat from the Orange Beach marina or take a guide.

For the golfer, there are over 200 holes to play on courses designed by some of the greats, including Arnold Palmer, Bruce Devlin and Jerry Pate. Orange Beach claims the very best courses in Alabama, from beachside greens to Scottish-inspired 18-hole courses. The closest to Orange Beach is Orange Beach Golf Center, open daily off Canal Road (Highway 180). Less than twenty minutes away at Craft Farms are 36 holes designed by Arnold Palmer, suitable for every level. The two golf courses are public, with “stay and play” packages or daily rates available.

The climate and weather of this part of Alabama is simply gorgeous. Daytime temperatures rarely drop below 16 degrees centigrade even in January, soaring up to the mid thirties in the height of summer. Though July is the wettest month that is a relative term: 20cms is the average monthly rainfall. April and May, coinciding with the music festival, could well be the ideal time to plan your visit with the temperatures hovering around 29 degrees and very low rainfall.

In terms of accommodation, there are a huge variety of options should you ever decide to sleep! There are modern condos directly on the beach along the Gulf Shores and even a Hilton Garden Resort, with all budgets catered for from motel and B&B to five-star resorts.

So whether you come for the music of the night, the swish of the club or the sound of the surf, Orange Beach is the perfect all-year-round destination.
